Grangeville Horizons Steering Committee Minutes
September 14, 2010


Attendees:  Mark Baker, Greg Bailey, Melissa Bryant, Shirley Crane, Jody Hoogland, Mary Jahn, Maria Plume,  Andrea Solberg,

Reports
  • Rails-to-Trails: Effort is ongoing but lacks leadership. Greg suggests the development of a trail on Spencer property and thinks a proposal should be considered. It would include a five-mile loop trail, estimated cost, and timeline. Mary and Andrea offered to talk to the Spencers and see if they are interested in supporting the effort. Mark will help to identify goals, objectves for the proposal.
  • School District: Greg reported that the budget is tight. There are new bleachers made possible by donations. New football field lights are in place. A distance learning award from the State is in place.  The youth entrepreneur action team has lost momentum. Noon events were not well attended.
  • Multi-Tenant Facility: Jody reported that UI/LCSC students will develop a business plan and feasibility study. Next  meeting is September 28 1-3PM at Department of Labor office.
  • Dress to Impress: Jody and Melissa reported that this committee assists employee new-hires develop good hygiene, proper clothing, self-esteem, and workplace etiquette. At completion of program, employee receives new clothing. Andrea suggested that Jody contact the high school's work-release program.
  • Food Bank: Shirley Crane reported that food banks is still operating but still struggle for funding.
  • Farmer's Market: Mark reported that there is a new board, new fee structure. Is considering a move to Pioneer Park. There has been some discussion about changing the day/time of the market. There will be no market on 9/17 because of 3-on-3 basketball tournament.
  • 3Rs Tutoring: Operates on Wednesdays at the Library. Needs high school and parent tutors.

  • Hunger Summit will be in Boise this year. Contact idahohungersummit.com for info.
  • Timebank may be out of buiness.
  • Khan Academy.org offers virtual tutoring for free.
  • Friends of the Library has lots of support but is working through logistical challenges for funding. Considering a 501(c)3.
  • Next meeting January 11, 2011 noon at Oscars.

Addendum
Steering Committee was polled for support of grangevillehorizons.org domain name and website renewal. Consensus was that website was underutilized. Only Grangeville Horizons Recreation supported continuing the website. Mary suggested renewing the domain name for one year and creating a free, simple website and a stop-gap measure.
